This is Volume 1 of 2 of the PhD Thesis of Dr.Ruth Benjamin which goes deeply into the question of why the cancer patient who has a good chance of survival and even cure will choose to opt out of treatment often with fatal results. This first volume goes into the literature of medical non compliance in general and the efforts that have been made to combat it. In Volume One of this thesis there is an extensive and informative literature survey on medical non compliance. In all branches of medicine people are putting their lives at risk by not taking their medication as prescribed. This is found in diabetes, cardiac conditions, epilepsy, lung disease, kidney disease, hypertension etc. Non compliance with healthy or curative lifestyle changes also show a low rate of compliance.
