Overview

Caleb Rys is a forensic speleologist and cartographer who maps the unmappable. When he is hired to explore the ""Gargoyle Fissure""-a massive, dry, uncharted limestone cave system deep in the desert-his mission is simple: recover the bodies of three amateur cavers who went missing weeks ago. But the terror begins deep underground when Caleb discovers the truth. The victims weren't amateur cavers; they were heavily armed private military contractors working for a shadow corporation. Their objective wasn't exploration, but the illegal extraction of a perfectly preserved, undiscovered prehistoric hominid frozen inside a subterranean thermal-ice pocket. In their explosive haste to break the ice, the mercenaries fractured a bedrock seal, releasing a high-pressure pocket of toxic, hallucinogenic volcanic gas into the enclosed cave system. As the invisible gas displaces the oxygen, Caleb suffers from severe hypoxia, triggering vivid, terrifying hallucinations that blur the line between reality and madness.
