Author Information

Myrna J. Simpson, Professor of Chemistry, University of Toronto, Canada. André J. Simpson, Associate Professor of Chemistry, University of Toronto, Canada. Environmental chemistry research Our research group studies environmental processes at the molecular-level. We use advanced analytical tools (namely mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy) to understand the structure and environmental reactivity of natural organic matter found in soils, sediments, water, and ice. We use advanced analytical tools to study the stability of natural organic matter with climate change.  We also study the sorption mechanisms of problematic organic contaminants to soils and sediments.  We are developing novel environmental metabolomic methods for the rapid and quantitative risk assessment of contaminated soil and water. The overall goal of our research is to improve the fundamental understanding of environmental processes at the molecular-level. By doing so, we hope to increase the knowledge of several environmental processes and directly apply this knowledge to solve pressing environmental problems.
