Author Information

Prof. Arunabha Ray is Head, Dept. of Pharmacology, Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (HIMSR), Hamdard University, New Delhi, India. He was formerly Director, Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute, University of Delhi, Director-Professor and Head, Department of Pharmacology at Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute, University of Delhi, and Dean, Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Delhi. Prof. Ray graduated in Medicine from the University of Calcutta and subsequently obtained MD and PhD degrees in Pharmacology from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Delhi. He has more than 40 years of teaching and research experience in basic and clinical pharmacology and allied biomedical sciences. He received postdoctoral training in universities and institutes in Canada and USA and specialized in research skills in the area of neuropharmacology and immunopharmacology. During his academic career, he has mentored research of several postgraduate and doctoral students as well aspostdoctoral fellows, who have later proceeded to make a mark for themselves as successful researchers/professionals in their chosen fields. Prof. Ray is internationally recognized as one of the leading exponents in the area of nitric oxide (NO) research. He showed through his innovative research that NO played a significant role as an endogenous regulatory molecule during stress and proposed NO mediated signaling pathways for stress induced anxiogenesis, immunomodulation, and gastric ulceration, as well as for stress adaptation. Prof. Ray continues to be a prolific researcher, and his research has been recognized at the highest level which has led to several awards, honors and fellowships. Prof. Ray has been invited to several global scientific platforms (most notably to several IUPHAR meetings), international academic institutions/universities to deliver lectures on his area of research expertise and has been the recipient of several honors/awards/fellowships throughout his career for his professional excellence. He has had collaborations with research laboratories in the academia and pharmaceutical industry both at the national and international levels and has been Visiting Professor to many reputed institutions/universities. He is chairperson and expert member at several national academic/scientific committees at leading institutions/universities/organizations and plays a key role in guiding ethical scientific research in basic and clinical pharmacology as well as allied areas. He has been actively associated with several professional bodies/societies in pharmacology as well as allied fields. Most notably, Prof. Ray is the President of the Society for Nitric Oxide and Allied Radicals (SNOAR) which was established by his initiative in 2011 for advancement of research in Nitric Oxide (NO) and allied radicals and organized several scientific meetings on the subject matter. He has more than 250 scientific publications (research papers, reviews, monographs, book chapters), has edited several reference books and authored a Textbook in Pharmacology. Prof. Kavita Gulati is Director-Professor in Pharmacology at Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute, University of Delhi. She is an M.Sc in Pharmacology from the AIIMS, New Delhi, and subsequently Ph.D. from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Delhi. Dr. Gulati has 30 years of teaching and research experience in Clinical & Experimental Pharmacology and Toxicology in different capacities in India and abroad. She is recipient of several national awards including the Achari Prize, Uvnas Prize and the prestigious Prof. B.N. Ghosh Oration of the Indian Pharmacological Society. Her research interests are cardio-respiratory pharmacology & toxicology, traditional medicine and stress research, with specific reference to nitric oxide (NO). In recognition of her contributions to the medical sciences she is elected as Fellow of NAMS (India) and IACS (Canada). She is life member of several professional bodies/societies relating to pharmacology and allied sciences. She is the Principal Investigator of several extramurally funded research projects and has the distinction of being invited to present talks at prestigious international meetings like IUPHAR, IACS, CMB Congress, World Stress Congress, and CPT Congress, International Immunology Congress etc.. She has been visiting scientist to several reputed international institutions like Semmelwies Medical University (Budapest, Hungary), University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (USA), Army Medical Institute (Xian, China), University of Minnesota at Minneapoilis (USA), University of Illinois at Chicago (USA), University of Manitoba (Canada), West Cape University (South Africa), University of Zagreb (Croatia) etc. and expert member at different Institutions and Government organizations in her field. She has published extensively in leading national and international journals (more than 250 publications), is co-author of several chapters in reference and textbooks of Pharmacology, and co-editor of four books in Pharmacology.
