Overview

Award-winning Niko Discovers the 5 Senses Game is a story with a purpose. Parents can enjoy the first read with their child (even for those kids who are reading independently), to learn for themselves the IMPACT the game can have on their child and themselves. Using the book as a perfect jumping-off point for critical conversations about anxiety and all the emotions that tie up one's thoughts, and prevent them from focusing, will build trust and understanding for children who battle with BIG EMOTIONS. Mindfulness can be a struggle for adults. Affording children the time to learn how to engage in ways to reset their thoughts when their tummies feel all bunched up and their mind is cycling around something provides skills for life. They need to learn how to TAKE BACK THEIR CONTROL. The 5 Senses Game allows for that, plus it encourages parents to use the game whenever they see their child struggling, or even when the adults are overwhelmed, and running thin on patience, it is a perfect game to ask their child to play along with them so they can feel better. Children learn from their parents, and when parents find a tool that works, kids are apt to as well. Every child, not just those currently struggling, can benefit from learning just like Niko does, so they are prepared for times when life becomes difficult. Today's issues have set children up for chronic anxiety as a response to the unexpected. Providing them with strategies to manage will give them confidence throughout their lives. 2022 Mom's Choice Award - Gold Recipient 2021 Hindi's Libraries - Females of Fiction Award - Finalist

Reviews

As a mindfulness teacher, I am always looking for books that bring mindfulness experiences to children. This book goes through the senses perfectly allowing the reader to stop and experience each sense or finishing the book and practicing later. I love the explanations and how-a child can learn to ground herself easily. Definitely need a few copies. Cindy This is a wonderful book to help children to deal with anxiety. It would be a great lesson for teachers to teach. Kindle Customer. Karen has created an excellent resource to use for children with anxiety troubles. Grounding activities like the one Niko walks through have demonstrated success in managing childhood anxieties, and this children's book serves as an excellent guide for parents to help walk their children through... B.C. Clinical Psychologist I loved this book. I'm a psychologist and already used it with a young client. It was great to teach mindfulness in a concrete and effective way. Very useful and highly recommend. M. Murph This book is simply amazing. After I read this book I felt a calm that was incredible. This is an excellent resource for families, teachers, and everyone! The ease of understanding Karen brings forth is so genuine you feel right there with the child. I highly recommend this book and will be telling all my friends to grab a copy. I know this is a children's book but all can benefit by reading it. Marlene Bates It's really about time more focus is given to the feeling of anxiety in a way children can relate to. My own child, age 6, has expressed more and more about mixed up feelings, and this really brings those feelings into a better understanding. As an adult, I have struggled personally with anxiety, and it has taken me all the way into my 30s until I could put words to it. I teach PreK and can see this being used regularly in a classroom setting. The story allows for different levels of engagement the more it is read. I also train adults and can see the premise of the story used to ground us at the beginning of sessions. Basically, although geared towards young children, it essentially lends itself as a tool that spans all ages. I would highly recommend adding this to the library, especially for those who work with young children. Stephanie Ellison We picked up two copies for our grandchildren and met the author at an outdoor fair in NH. We have been on the hunt for resources and ideas to help one of our littles, in particular, who struggles to calm herself during what we call code red events. She loves books. This book will help her get her mind in a better place to help process her strong emotions. My wife, a pre-school teacher, says anxiety is increasing each year in her classes even at 3 and 4 years old. D. Linscott Niko Discovers The Five Senses Game is a great read-aloud or independent reader book for children. The book entertains its audience while helping develop communication, cognitive, social, and problem-solving skills. A great learning tool in the power of Mindfulness and helps to lay a foundation for better emotional health for children. This book appeals to children and families regardless of how they are defined. Terry B.

Author Information

"Author, Karen Correll, of Rutland, Vermont graduated in 2021 from SNHU with her bachelor's degree in Communications with a concentration in Public Relations, following a 30+ year career in business operations. While taking a class in the summer of 2020, she was researching childhood anxiety. The findings and data impacted her deeply, pushing her to find a way to help children struggling with the stress of worries, fears, and anxiousness. She knew she needed to do something to help children learn to take back their control over big emotions, like anxiety. Shortly thereafter, Niko Discovers the 5 Senses Game was born, all while fulfilling a dream of one day becoming a children's book author. Through a story about a game, Correll found a way to impact families, using a reconstructed ""game"", teaching parents along with their children how to play. Her dream is that parents use the story to start conversations about big emotions and use the game in everyday life when anyone in the family is struggling. Correll is continuously building on the Niko story, offering ways to practice at home. Plans for the next book are in the works to help children with separation anxiety.
