OverviewThe 17th century grotto of Herrenhauser Garten in Hannover Germany, was stripped of its ornate decoration during the 18th Century. For Expo 2000, the artist Niki de Saint Phalle was commissioned to redesign the three rooms retaining the original notion of the grotto being a place of enchantment. The octagonal middle room and those to its left and right are now splendidly decorated with mosaics made from coloured glass and mirrors, with pebbles and numerous painted sculptures made of fibreglass. The spiral-shaped arrangement of the ornaments around the column in the entrance hall symbolises spirituality, with the western mirrored room signifying day and life and the eastern blue room night and the cosmos.
