OverviewIn recent years right-wing populism has experienced an upswing in Europe and almost every day we hear statements from politicians who not only underline this tendency but also foment it. In contrast, the curricula in Austria's schools provide instruction that forces information on the subject of National Socialism and is intended to counteract inhuman behaviour. Orientation competence and personality development for pupils are important value benchmarks. In Germany studies on the learning process of Christians and Jews began as early as the 1970s, while in Austria it was not until the early 1990s that curricula and textbooks were discussed. A large-scale study in 2014 on the subject of Mauthausen sheds more light on what is happening in the classroom. The present volume now deals with the teaching concepts that teachers of religious education develop so that memorial learning can succeed. For the first time, the focus is on the teachers themselves with their personal and professional approaches to the subject.
