Nicola Sturgeon: A Memoir of Scotland's Women

Overview

The story of Nicola Ferguson Sturgeon begins in the industrial heartlands of Ayrshire, where a quiet, bookish child would grow to become one of the most significant political figures in Scottish history. Born into a workingclass family during a period of profound social and economic change in Scotland, her early experiences would shape the convictions and determination that would later define her political career. Birth and Family Background Nicola Ferguson Sturgeon was born on July 19, 1970, at Ayrshire Central Hospital in Irvine, the eldest of two daughters to Joan Kerr Sturgeon (née Ferguson) and Robin Sturgeon. Her parents represented the solid working-class backbone of Scottish society: her mother Joan worked as a dental nurse, while her father Robin was an electrician. The family's roots extended beyond Scotland's borders, with her paternal grandmother Margaret Sturgeon (née Mill) hailing from Ryhope in what is now Sunderland, bringing a touch of North East England heritage to the Scottish household. The Sturgeon family embodied the aspirational working class of 1970s Scotland. Margaret Sturgeon had married Robert Sturgeon, a gardener from Ayr, at St Paul's Parish Church in 1943, and together they had eventually settled in the southwest of Scotland. This cross-border heritage would later inform Nicola's understanding of the complex relationships within the United Kingdom, though it would not diminish her commitment to Scottish independence.
