Overview

The New Zealand Division was an infantry division of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force raised for service in the First World War. It was formed in Egypt in early 1916 when New Zealand and Australian Division was renamed after the detachment of its Australian personnel left the New Zealand Infantry Brigade, together with reinforcements from New Zealand, as the basis of the division. It was commanded by Major General Andrew Hamilton Russell for the duration of the war. Why did so many New Zealanders sail from the 'uttermost ends of the Earth' to die by numbers in muddy foreign soil? And were the tactics as mindless as climbing out of a trench and walking very slowly towards the Germans until everyone was dead? The author provides some answers in this no-holds-barred account of New Zealand's three-year hell on earth in Flanders and Picardy. Drawing on soldiers' diaries and letters, some published here for the first time, Wright paints the vivid, harrowing picture of a life-and-death struggle shared, throughout the war, by more than 100,000 young Kiwi soldiers.
