Excerpt: ...and children, should, in following the divine Master, go so far away from their homes and stay with Him three days; but if we consider that the climate in those countries is so mild that during the greater part of the year the people may pass the night in the open air, and that the same habits to some extent still exist in those Eastern lands, we shall have no difficulty in understanding what is related of the crowds that followed Christ. When we recollect that among the Hebrew people the religious sentiment was profound and all powerful, that they were in a fever of excited expectation concerning the coming of the Messias, that their nomadic habits were not yet forgotten, that they had been powerfully roused by the preaching of John, and that they had been listening to Jesus with transports of delight and witnessing His stupendous miracles, when we recollect all this, it will not seem surprising that the people came out in throngs and in their enthusiasm followed Jesus wherever He went. From the great pilgrimages which take place in our own day we can form a faint idea of what then took place about the person of Jesus. The people of course brought something to eat with them, but this was entirely consumed when Jesus called His disciples to Him and in accents of ineffable tenderness said: I have compassion on the multitude. And why was Jesus so lovingly compassionate toward the crowds that followed Him? He gives four very simple reasons: Because they have been with Me three days; because they have nothing to eat; because if I send them away fasting to their home, they will faint in the way; and because some of them came from afar off.
