OverviewIntroduction Thomas Mann was a German novelist and essayist who was born on June 6, 1875, in Lübeck, Germany, and passed away on August 12, 1955, near Zürich, Switzerland. His first two books, Buddenbrooks (1900) and Der Tod in Venedig (1912; Der Zauberberg (1924; Death in Venice) and The Enchanted Mountain) - procured him the Nobel Prize for Writing in 1929.
