Overview

As if middle school wasn't hard enough! In 1993, when Melissa's family decides to move across the country, she's thrown from sunny California into the stormy halls of a New Jersey middle school. Melissa struggles to find her footing while simultaneously dealing with puberty, a growing interest in boys, and an increasing amount of anxiety. While navigating these challenges and overcoming amusing twists and turns, she discovers the strength to grow into her own, forming empowering friendship and celebrating the diverse quirks, dreams, and endless possibilities that make each of us unique. In this funny, heartwarming tale that echoes themes of feminism, Melissa ultimately learns the true meaning of friendship and finally carves a place for herself in New Jersey.

Reviews

""NEW JERSEY GIRL skillfully blends humor with exceptional storytelling that effortlessly draws readers in. Filled with cringe-worthy moments and relatable experiences, it's a must read for anyone who has navigated-or is about to navigate-the halls of middle school."" - Brendan Deneen, bestselling author of GREEN ARROW: STRANDED ""NEW JERSEY GIRL is a tender, sweet story about growing up, forging friendships, and discovering that what sets us apart is the very thing that makes us special. I couldn't help but root for Melissa as she navigated life in between mean girls, crushes, and 'poo-berty.' A laugh out loud read with lots of heart and soul!"" - Adam Angel, Co-author of BUS STOP BUDDIES ""NEW JERSEY GIRL addresses all the angst and uncertainty that comes with the unknown. It talks boogers and periods and tampons and crushes and embarrassment and jealousy and labels and the dreaded changing to a new lunch table in the cafeteria. And it's written in a near-diary style that makes it a fun, easy read creating vivid, memorable scenes and characters."" - Bridget Bendo, author of CATIE AND MAURA'S GIANT ADVENTURE ""NEW JERSEY GIRL is a funny novel. I loved the meaning behind friendship and was absorbed in the plot."" - Violet Marion, 5th grade student ""NEW JERSEY GIRL is a great book for middle-grade kids. It stayed true to the middle-school experience. I felt like I was part of the story along with the main character. The storyline was compelling, and I need a sequel!"" - Emmy Santo, 6th grade student
