Overview

What happens when a friendly, caring, intelligent, and anxiety prone ""front seat dog"" faces her first day as the ""new dog"" in a new school? Roxanne has an anxious streak and as her first day as the ""new dog"" in a new school draws closer, her anxiety kicks in big time. What shoes should she wear? A lunch box or brown paper bag? Sunglasses? Will her teacher like her? Will the other dogs be nice? Will she make any friends? Roxanne is convinced that nothing will go right and fears she'll be on the receiving end of some significant hazing. When the morning of her first day arrives she refuses to go. Though sympathetic, her mother tells Roxanne that she WILL go to school and gives Roxanne some tips for easing her anxiety and facing this important day. Find out if Roxanne's first day is as bad as she thinks! New Dog in School is the first book in the series She's Roxanne!, a series for 8-12 year olds teaching life skills and social issues. Although focusing on the themes of anxiety and hazing, Book 1 is also a vehicle for introducing the characters and the positive and unyielding spirit of our protagonist, Roxanne. Anticipated future topics include among others information about college-going, making school accessible for disabled students, being in the foster care system, having an incarcerated parent, healthy eating, smoking and vaping, and sexual harassment and assault.

Reviews

As both a classroom teacher and a parent of a soon-to-be 8-year-old, I appreciate the way New Dog in School tackles important social issues in a format that resonates with young readers. These themes are incredibly relevant, as many students experience similar struggles when adjusting to new environments. Erica Tardiff, Elementary school teacher and math specialist, Griswold Elementary School, Kensington, CT My nine year old totally loved it and read it independently. He thought it was the perfect length; more than he would typically read in one sitting but he loved it so it was easy to get through. Kim Matus (parent) The work is evident. It's beautiful! Author Information

Helping students achieve their dreams is Adrienne Leinwand Maslin's passion and is the reason she spent the first 45 years of her career helping college and university students achieve success. What that experience taught her is that too many students come to higher education, or assume adult roles, socially, emotionally, and academically unprepared for what is before them. With that reality as her motivation, and with her dedication to student and personal success in college and in life, Adrienne has written numerous articles about the college experience and her series of graphic novels, She's Roxanne!, was born. Adrienne has worked at large and small, urban and rural, two-year and four-year, and public and private colleges and universities throughout the U.S. Although she has worked in a variety of different capacities as an administrator and an instructor, the highlight of any position she has held was the knowledge that the work she was doing would in some way help students achieve their goals. Adrienne holds a BA in Anthropology from the University of Vermont, an MEd in Counseling from Boston University, and a PhD in Higher Education Administration from the University of Oregon. When she is not walking her dog, Roxanne, or working on writing projects, you can find Adrienne reading, traveling, at the gym, shopping for jeans at Marshalls, or enjoying the company of family and good friends over good food and wine. The meal always ends with ice cream!
