OverviewThis book gives the basic information required for making experiments in neutron or x-ray scattering or spectroscopy. These experiments are usually executed at large facilities far from the scientist's home laboratory. One of the main goals of this book is to teach the scientist the possibilities offered to him in these institutions. In addition the book can be seen as a rather complete introduction into the physics of synchrotron radiation as applied to condensed matter physics and to molecular biology. The articles are based on lectures given in a two-months course, HERCULES, installed in Grenoble to train biologists, chemists and physicists. The book covers the production of radiation including theory. It describes all aspects of instrumentation and outlines the basics for various fields of research done in these large facilities. The short chapters are written by experts in the field and can be read independently. The book may also be used as the basis for a lecture on neutron and x-ray defraction. This volume will befollowed by two more dealing with applications to solid state physics and chemistry as well as to biology and soft-matter physics.
