His main interests were in the fields of high-resolution neutron spectroscopy, neutron polarization and nuclear instrumentation. From 1952 until 1965 he was a member of the Nuclear Physics Division at Harwell in the UK, and from 1965 until his retirement in 1999 he was a member of the Department of Physics at Yale University where he served as the Chairman of the Department, Director of the Electron Accelerator Laboratory and the Master of Trumbull College.
