Overview

This book proposes an integrative and mechanistic model to understand Sensory Processing Regulation Disorders as a systemic expression of neurobiological dysregulation, beyond the classical approaches focused exclusively on sensory integration. From the framework of Psychoneuroimmunoendocrinology, the roles of chronic low-grade neuroinflammation, dysautonomia, excitation-inhibition imbalance, microglia, the gut-brain-microbiota axis, and neuroendocrine stress programming in the genesis of sensory phenotypes are discussed in an articulate manner.The text integrates clinical, experimental and translational evidence to explain hyperresponsiveness, hyporesponsiveness and sensory seeking as dynamic manifestations of the same pathophysiological core.
