His books include The Foundations of Naval History (1998), Trincomalee: The Last of Nelson's Frigates (2002), Nelson: Britannia's God of War (2004), Franklin: Tragic Hero of Polar Exploration (2009), and The Challenge: Britain Against America in the Naval War of 1812 (2012).
