OverviewThis book is the first in a series that seeks to accompany the reader along a path of philosophical reflection. The intention is to reach a broader audience than the usual, narrow circle of specialists or students. While philosophy is an undeniably demanding discipline, it is my conviction that it concerns what cannot help but truly matter to everyone: it seeks to understand what this life is-this life we have been given to live-and what meaning, if any, can be discerned in an existence that at times seems to have none at all. In other words, philosophy attempts to offer the words and concepts to articulate and make sense of what we live through every day. The challenge, of course, is to increase the number of readers without diminishing the rigor of the inquiry. The choice to begin our philosophical journey with Parmenides and Heraclitus was not accidental: they represent, even today, the two possible paths of philosophy.
