Dr Thembelihle Brenda Makhanya is a Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader in Social Work at the University of Mpumalanga, South Africa. She holds a BSW, MSocSci, and PhD from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa where her doctoral study explored (de)coloniality in social work education. Her research centres on decolonial theory, Afrocentricity, Ubuntu, student wellbeing, and family dynamics.An emerging award-winning scholar, she received recognition from the NIHSS and was a runner-up for ASASWEI's ""Emerging Social Work Educator of the Year 2021."" She is Chairperson of the Imbewu Youth Empowerment Centre, South Africa supporting rural learners' access to higher education. Dr Makhanya is active in international networks like the Ubuntu Research Group and has presented in Kenya and India on decolonial and sustainable community development. She teaches across critical areas of social work and remains committed to dismantling colonial legacies, affirming African-centred knowledge, and advancing social justice in education and practice.
