OverviewThe Barnim Nature Park is known as the 'green lung' at the gates of the capital. With its varied landscapes, sights and leisure activities, the only common large protected area in the states of Brandenburg and Berlin is enjoying steadily growing popularity with visitors from near and far. This volume is aimed at readers who would like to find out more about the area between the Havel, Oder and Spree or who are specifically looking for information and backgrounds that tourism brochures cannot provide. The book presents the genesis of the natural area, its current characteristics and ecological functions. And it explains the entanglements, synergies and conflicts that arise from the location of the nature park between the metropolis of Berlin and the cities and communities in the northern vicinity. Graphics, images and elaborately designed maps illustrate the texts contributed by authors from a wide range of disciplines and also make the book a visual delight. The Barnim Nature Park comprises parts of the northern Berlin districts of Pankow and Reinickendorf as well as the districts of Barnim, Oberhavel and Märkisch Oderland in Brandenburg. With the regional study presented here, this metropolitan area is presented for the first time in a comprehensive way from the point of view of various natural and human sciences disciplines in a generally understandable and clear form. Illustrated with numerous specially developed thematic maps and graphics as well as other images, the complex landscape genesis of the Barnim between the Havel in the west, Oder in the east and the Spree in the south is clearly explained. The deepening relationships between the metropolis of Berlin and the cities and municipalities of its northern environs, which deepen with social development, are exemplarily worked out from their historical origins to the present day. In this context, the function of the transnational nature park Barnim, which has existed since 1998, is explained. An e-book is delivered with the printed book. Numerous aspects are discussed in more detail in the associated online presence. There are also challenging excursion route recommendations available.
