Natural Products in Drug Discovery: Benefits, Challenges, and Opportunities

Overview

Natural products are rich in bioactive compounds that can be explored for drug development. This new volume combines the potential of traditional medicine with modern techniques for using products derived from natural sources such as plants, microbes, and marine sources as the basis for drug development. It presents valuable information on the bioactive potential of natural products with properties that are antimicrobial, immunomodulatory, anti-cancerous, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, antiviral, etc., along with their usage in drug development. Recent techniques used for the isolation and identification of bioactive ingredients from natural sources are covered. The book also reviews the latest developments in the field of genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics for harnessing these natural products for commercial applications. The current status of bioprospection and commercialization of natural products-based drugs is reviewed as well.
