He was Professor of History and Director of the Center for Studies in Texas History and the Texas State Historical Association at the University of Texas at Austin (1986–2006), and subsequently Director of the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, Texas (2006–2011). He is the author of a number of publications, including Audubon’s Great National Work (1993) and Western Art, Western History (2019).
