Reviews

The book provides an excellent and timely overview on the chemistry and biological applications of various types of nanoparticles and their composites. Starting from the fundamental science of preparation and surface functionalization, the book, following a clear and didactic approach, covers the most important topics which are related to applications of nanoparticles in the biological and medical field. The chapters provide basic principles, detailed insights, and possible applications of the discussed systems and refer the more interested reader to the most important literature. This makes the book a comprehensive reference for graduate students and senior scientists who want to enter this fascinating scientific field at the crossroads of various disciplines. -Prof. Guido Kickelbick, Saarland University, Germany

Author Information

Tito Trindade is associate professor at the Department of Chemistry and member of the Centre for Research in Ceramics and Composite Materials (CICECO) of the University of Aveiro (Portugal). Following his PhD at the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine in London (1996), he has implemented a research line in the University of Aveiro with a special focus on the synthesis and chemical surface modification of nanomaterials. His other research interests include the chemistry of inorganic pigments and the synthesis of inorganic-organic hybrids. He is co-author of around 130 scientific publications. As part of his academic activities, he has been involved in teaching nanochemistry and communicating materials chemistry for nonspecialized audiences, in particular issues related to nanotechnology. Ana Luisa Daniel da Silva is auxiliary researcher at the Centre for Research in Ceramics and Composite Materials (CICECO) of the University of Aveiro. Dr. da Silva received her degree in chemical engineering from Instituto Superior Tecnico (Lisbon, Portugal) in 2000 and her PhD with honors in materials science from the University of Alicante (Spain) in 2005. Her main scientific interests center on the development of nanomaterials for bio-applications, including magnetic nanoparticles and scaffolds for bone regeneration. Her work has been published in SCI papers, and she has been a regular referee for journals in the area of chemistry and materials science.
