Overview

"Emerging evidence suggests that a large group of the population suffers from various daily lifestyle irregularities and stress-mediated disorders such as cancer, auto-immune disease, diabetes, arthritis, allergies, etc. The health-conscious population of the world is growing very fast due to increased awareness of diet and nutrition, which are associated with good health and disease prevention. The past few decades have witnessed higher growth in the food industry and allied industries engaged in business related to functional foods and nutraceuticals. Dietary supplements and functional food ingredients are popular as health improvers and disease preventers (Shahidi et al., 2012). Bioactive compounds are considered one of the most widely researched areas due to their various health-promoting effects and non-toxic nature. Among the bioactive compounds, phenolic phytochemicals have attracted much attention. Phenols are secondary metabolites of plants and are defined as ""hydroxybenzene."" It contains benzene rings with one or more hydroxyl substituents. Phenolic phytochemicals are classified into two main categories: (i) water-soluble (e.g., phenolic acids, hydrolysable tannins (Ellagitannin and gallotannins), phenylpropanoids, flavonoids, and quinones) and (ii) water-insoluble (e.g., condensed tannins, lignins, and cell-wall bound hydroxyl- cinnamic acids) (Rahmanian et al., 2014, 2015; Taghvaei and Jafari, 2015; Z Rafiee et al., 2012). These phytochemicals are an important source of nutraceuticals in our daily diet (Petti and Scully, 2009). They are best known for their health-promoting properties, such as antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties, anti-cancer properties, anti-diabetic properties, and organ-protective properties (Cirillio et al., 2016)."
