Will you carry me across the pond? the scorpion asked the frog. No I will not, replied the frog, for you will sting me and I will die. I will not sting you, insisted the scorpion, because if you die I will drown. Satisfied that the response was reasonable, the frog allowed the scorpion onto his back and began to swim. Halfway across the pond the frog felt a sharp sting in his back. Oh no, cried the frog, what have you done? Now we will both die. I know, replied the scorpion, but I couldn't help it. It is my character. Papa told this story many times to his children, reminding them of the intense struggle within all people between the natural and carnal character traits that draw us down, and those divine qualities we all have inherited from our heavenly parents that would lift us up. Beginning on the steps of the Detroit orphanage, Joe Wyson sought to discover his divine purpose in life, all the while struggling with the inner scorpion that plagues us all.
