Overview

This book is an autobiography tracing Rosemary Radford Ruether's intellectual development and writing career. Ruether examines the influence of her mother and family on her development and particularly her interactions with the Roman Catholic religious tradition. She delves into her exploration of interfaith relations with Judaism and Islam as well. Her educational formation at Scripps College and the importance of historical theology is also a major emphasis. Mental illness has also affected Ruether's nuclear family in the person of her son, and she details the family's struggle with this issue. Finally in this intellectual autobiography, Ruether explores her long concern and involvement with ecology, feminism, and the quest for a spirituality and practice for a livable planet.

Reviews

This is a very gripping book. I read it twice, and found it convincing and at points very moving. --Joseph C. Hough, Jr., Union Theological Seminary This autobiography by one of the most distinguished and influential thinkers of our time transcends the boundaries of autobiography. We learn a lot about Rosemary Ruether, but because so much is about her thought, and her thought is so insightful, we learn a great deal about the world in which we have all been living. Ruether is a severe critic of what has been, but she also offers hope for what may yet be. --John Cobb, Claremont School of Theology Scholars, students, and seekers will all find much to ponder in Rosemary Reuther's intellectual autobiography. Those who know her work and significance will appreciate this intimate disclosure of the ideas, insights, and people that have shaped her scholarship. Those interested in the evolution of a leading feminist thinker will be fascinated by the unfolding story of this exceptional life. And those searching themselves will be instructed and encouraged by her quest for hope and meaning. --William E. Lesher, Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago In one person we get the historian with a wide-angle lens, the theologian with a woman's sharp eye, the activist with lifelong commitments. What an education to watch how a life not so different from our own unfolds from one awakening to another! --Antoinette Wire, San Francisco Theological Seminary and the Graduate Theological Union
