My Own Trumpet, My Own Drum: A Soldier Reminisces

Overview

This book is a rambling account of several interesting incidents and episodes in a busy and varied career of an Army officer who has had the good fortune to serve in many different places, in many different appointments, for many decades. This book has no pretensions to enrich the great fund of military lore. This is just a tale of a wonderful time which a young professional soldier had the great good luck to enjoy. And it is meant to amuse the reader as much as it has amused the writer. The Indian army has changed over the years. The challenges are different too. But in every soldier's life there are lighter moments that help offset the gravitas of their noble calling. This book is replete with them.

Author Information

Lt Col A. M. Menon graduated from the Madras Christian College at Tambaram with a Master of Arts degree in 1940. Soon after this, he joined the staff of The Mail in Madras as a Sub-Editor. In 1943, he was selected for military training and was commissioned as a 2/Lieutenant in the Regiment of Artillery in June 1944. As a regimental officer, Col. Menon served in the Old North-West Frontier Province, Waziristan, and the Middle East during the last World War. At the time of the partition of India, he was serving with a regiment in Hyderabad (Sind) and returned to India in December 1947. After Independence, he served in several regimental, staff and instructional appointments. He graduated from the Defence Services Staff College in 1953 and was appointed Brigade Major of an infantry brigade somewhere in Kashmir. In December 1961, he went to Saigon (Vietnam) as the General Staff Officer Grade 2 of the International Commission for Supervision and Control. On return to India in October 1962, he joined a field artillery regiment then involved in the operations in NEFA. In early 1963 he was promoted to Lt Col and commanded an artillery regiment somewhere in Sikkim. He became General Staff Officer, Grade 1 at HQ Tamil Nadu, Mysore and Kerala Area, at Madras. Col. Menon had an extremely interesting and varied career, and he looks back on his experiences with nostalgia, great delight, and good humour. He was also a regular writer of articles and stories.
