A children's picture book: My name is Carla McKnight Buchanan. I grew up in a big house with fancy dresses, but my mamma beat me. Through it all, I felt my angels whispering that the pain was hers-not mine. May my story bring hope to every heart that reads it. Now I know that I don't deserve to be hit. I don't deserve to be trapped in a corner, I don't deserve to be yelled at, I don't deserve to be poked. I don't deserve to be whipped. I don't deserve to be put down. I am a good girl and I can take care of myself. My daddy loves me more than his girlfriend's daughter, I am smart, beautiful, and my body is just right. I have many friends. Wherever I go, whatever I do, my angels are always with me, and my angels are always right. I wrote My Mamma Beats Me because it happened to a child-me. For years, I carried the pain in silence. I didn't understand why the person who was supposed to protect me was the one who hurt me. I kept wondering: Why didn't anyone help me? My aunts, uncles, teachers, and neighbors were all there. They saw us. Maybe they thought we were too wealthy to be in pain. Maybe they were afraid of my mother, like I was. I got tired of holding back the truth, of protecting the image of someone who didn't protect me. I wrote this book in a child's voice because that's who lived it. I wanted the story to feel honest, simple, and real. And even in the darkest moments, I knew my angels were with me-telling me that it wasn't my fault, that I was a good girl, and that my other was sick in the head. This book is my truth, my healing, my story, and my hope that no child is ever unseen again. Where ever I go, whatever I do, my angels are always with me. And my angels are always right.
