Brain Surgeon Without a Scalpel: Memoir of a Stereotactic Radiosurgery Pioneer

Overview

One of the most influential innovators in modern brain surgery, Dr. Lawrence Dade Lunsford, chronicles his career in this memoir. A distinguished professor of neurosurgery at the University of Pittsburgh, he spent 50 years pioneering image-guided and minimally invasive neurosurgical techniques. From creating the first image-guided operating room in 1981 to establishing the United States' first Gamma Knife radiosurgery theater in 1987, he transformed the treatment of brain tumors, vascular malformations, movement disorders, and severe pain syndromes. Spanning 75 years, this book explores four central themes: the influence of mentors and colleagues, the fusion of imaging with precise surgical technologies, the introduction and evolution of Gamma Knife radiosurgery, and the challenges that come with a leadership position at a major academic medical center. In addition to his clinical and research accomplishments, Dr. Lunsford trained hundreds of neurosurgeons and medical specialists through innovative international programs.

Author Information

Lawrence Dade Lunsford, MD, is the Lars Leksell Professor of Neurological Surgery and prior department chair at the University of Pittsburgh. In his 50-year career he has published more than 1300 peer reviewed articles and book chapters and edited or co-edited 18 books. He was the first person in the U.S. to install a dedicated CT scanner in the operating room for image guided brain surgery and the first in the U.S. to introduce the Gamma knife for brain stereotactic radiosurgery. These pioneering actions have helped to focus the field of brain surgery on adoption of minimally invasive techniques that dramatically improve patient outcomes.
