OverviewThe Hopes are your typical English family: there's the breadwinner James, the housewife Diane, and their two children, Betty and Harley. It's the mid-eighties, and to say the country's going through some changes would be an understatement - and that's even before the brand new state-of-the-art Singlemart superstore opens up in their little midlands town, generating much excitement among the residents. There is, however, a catch. When shopping, everyone must use a swipe card, and every item they purchase gets recorded. It soon becomes evident that each item has a points value - either negative or positive depending on how 'healthy' that item is deemed to be - and a person's overall points can either mean a bright future for them, or no future at all. Unfortunately, the new Singlemarts are just the tip of the iceberg; with the government looking to control every aspect of their citizens' lives, there are dark times ahead. As the country gets torn down the middle, how will the Hopes cope with this new way of life? With most of her family obeying the rules, will quiet, submissive Diane comply like she's been doing her whole life, or will she stand up and fight for once? In this terrible new world, is there even any hope left at all? My Life In Your Hands may be set in the past, but the issues and themes explored within its pages could easily be indicative of our future - a future where rebellion would be inevitable.
