Ryan and his comrades were, as he admits, abysmally ignorant of politics. Most of them knew nothing of Northern Ireland. Most had never been to Northern Ireland before they crossed the border with guns in their hands.' - History Ireland '..a must-read book...Like many a young man of his generation, he dreamed of being in the GPO in 1916 with Pearse and Connolly and believed that their sacrifice, along with that of Tone, Emmett, Mitchell and others sustained his own. A vivid story-teller, Ryan describes in detail the tragicomic attacks with hopelessly antiquated weapons mounted against the northern state, punctuated by grateful stays at nationalist safe houses, with people gladly sharing what little food they had, sometimes only bread and tea. The book is also a poignant social history of Ireland in the 1940s and 1950s' - Frank MacGabhann, The Irish Times Author InformationMick Ryan grew up in Dublin’s East Wall. From an early age he was entranced by stories of Ireland’s fight for freedom and he joined the IRA as a teenager. On 12 December 1956 he participated in the launch of the border campaign and, with the exception of two brief periods in prison, was active throughout the campaign.
