In July, 1921, Peter Hurd was a West Point plebe with dreams of a military destiny. ROBERT METZGER, a writer and editor, received his B.A. in English from Yale University. For his work on this book, he made research trips to Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, and New Mexico, where he lived for a time on the Hurds' ranch. Metzger, whose writings include fiction and screenplays, lives in the Los Angeles area.
