My Lady's Money

Overview

The novella My Lady's Money (1877) is a light detective story blending social comedy with elements of mystery. The plot revolves around a theft in a respectable English household: a sum of money disappears, and suspicion quickly falls upon Isabel Miller, a young and impoverished governess employed by Lady Lydiard. To clear Isabel's name, the investigation is taken up by Sergeant Cuff, the retired detective who also appears in Collins's celebrated novel The Moonstone. Through a series of subtle observations and inquiries, Cuff unravels the truth, exposing prejudice, class bias, and human folly along the way.
