My Journey: From Archeology to World Politics

Overview

Life and career prospects begin with a collection of more or less coherent thoughts. From an early age, I dreamed of becoming a train conductor, a pilot, or a roving reporter. None of those led to anything. My interest changed when I discovered a fascinating book on archaeological discoveries in Biblical lands. So, I chose to study archaeology and art history at Ghent University, continued my studies abroad at Ankara University, and participated in the first Belgian excavation campaign in Turkey (Pessinus), which was interrupted by my compulsory one-year military service in Belgium. I joined the diplomatic corps and spent four decades representing Belgium on five continents and twelve countries either at peace, undermined at various degrees by political tensions or uprooted by war. The stories related in this book are singular to each country but also universal. Many French, Japanese, or American colleagues will recognise their involvement in similar or comparable situations elsewhere. I hope you will enjoy reading this book as much as I did writing it.

Reviews

Reviewed by Carol Thompson for Readers' Favorite My Journey: Memoir of a Belgian Diplomat by Ron Ziegler shares a life dedicated to diplomacy, cultural exchange, and global service. Ziegler guides readers on a journey across continents (all but Australia), recounting his experiences in various postings, from the bustling streets of Kinshasa to the serene landscapes of Malaysia, the vibrant atmosphere of Chicago, and the complexities of the Middle East. The memoir is filled with anecdotes that illustrate the struggles and successes of a diplomat's life. Ziegler's storytelling is marked by respect for history, culture, and human relationships. His meetings with world leaders, his work in building international relations, and his efforts to handle political tensions are explained clearly and thoughtfully. Each chapter offers a glimpse into the unique situations in the countries where he worked, helping readers gain a broader understanding of global diplomacy. Ron Ziegler's accounts of family life, the bonds formed with colleagues, and the personal sacrifices made in the name of service create a compelling narrative. The inclusion of lighter moments, such as humorous cultural misunderstandings and memorable social events, balances the weight of the more serious diplomatic challenges he faced. Whether dealing with political upheavals, navigating complex negotiations, or addressing the needs of Belgian citizens abroad, Ziegler remained composed. My Journey is a reflection on the broader themes of identity, duty, and the interconnectedness of nations. His passion for his work and dedication to promoting cross-cultural understanding shine throughout the memoir. This book will attract readers interested in international relations, history, and the personal stories behind global diplomacy. Ziegler's engaging writing style and diverse experiences make this an excellent read. Reviewed by Georgia Mayden for Readers' Favorite ""...Reading My Journey by Ron Ziegler felt like being invited into a life lived with purpose, curiosity, and resilience. I loved the honesty with which Ziegler recounts his childhood in Antwerp and the hardships his family endured. Instead of glossing over loss and struggle, he writes with a tenderness that makes those memories vivid. I admired the way he transformed setbacks into new beginnings, especially how a path that started in archaeology redirected him into diplomacy through chance and determination. I admired the way he wrote about his wife, Arlette, not only as a partner but also as the anchor who supported him through demanding diplomatic years. His children, Stefan and Saskia, are shown with real warmth; their place is clear in the little moments that reveal how they gave him joy even when his work kept them apart. The pace held my attention, and the themes of duty, strength, and belonging truly stand out. This book is for readers who like stories about courage, bringing change across the world, and the lasting and powerful bonds that always come from deep family love.""
