Table of ContentsReviews"Excellent new series from Picture Window Books: FRIENDS WITH DISABILITIES It has 4 titles, all written by Amanda Doering Tourville, illus. by Kristin Sorra: MY FRIEND HAS AUTISM; MY FRIEND HAS ADHD, MY FRIEND HAS DOWN SYNDROME; MY FRIEND HAS DYSLEXIA. Over the years I have had a number of books on these subjects to sell. Some have been straightforward, non-fiction titles, some are fiction that lightly may touch on these subjects. Tourville's books are fiction, but loaded with facts about these conditions. The main characters talk to their friends with these conditions, frankly let us know where the problems come up, and how to deal with the frustrations of communication. These books are written for 7-9 year-olds, but there were a few facts that were also quite enlightening for me. I will never try to re-arrange and autistic person's things, for assistance. They most likely will be displeased -- at best. These would be great for home, but can be found at your library soon. This, the latest title in Picture Window Books' Friends with Disabilities series, follows My Friend Has... books about autism, Down Syndrome, and dyslexia. In My Friend Has ADHD, using language just right for the kindergarten-through-third-grade crowd, Marcus tells the reader about his friend Robby, who has ADD/ADHD, describing his positive qualities -- he's creative and game to try new things -- balanced with his worrisome traits -- he has trouble waiting in line, he sometimes talks when he isn't supposed to. Plus, each two-page spread features facts about ADD/ADHD, expanding upon Marcus's thoughtful narrative. The book's matter-of-fact tone and balanced portrayal of this condition make it a valuable resource for introducing ADD/ADHD to our children, their friends, and their classmates. http: //www.additudemag.com/adhdblogs/4/7303.html-- ""ADHD Parenting Blog"" The Friends with Disabilities series tackles such conditions as autism, dyslexia, and Down syndrome by having the narrator of each book describe a friend afflicted with each disability. In this volume, a boy named Marcus talks about his buddy Robby, who has ADHD. ""We've been friends forever,"" says Marcus, but that doesn't mean Marcus doesn't get anxious about Robby's behavior, like when he talks when he shouldn't: ""He isn't doing it on purpose. But I worry we'll get in trouble."" Positive attributes, like Robby's creativity, are mixed in with the negative. Sorra's textured artwork uses a soothing color palate, bizarrely canted settings, and amusingly featured characters to tell the tale. ""Did You Know?"" insets add fast facts, and back matter includes a glossary, medical description, bibliography, Web sites, and index.-- ""Booklist""" Excellent new series from Picture Window Books: FRIENDS WITH DISABILITIES It has 4 titles, all written by Amanda Doering Tourville, illus. by Kristin Sorra: MY FRIEND HAS AUTISM; MY FRIEND HAS ADHD, MY FRIEND HAS DOWN SYNDROME; MY FRIEND HAS DYSLEXIA.
