My Family in Central Park

Overview

My Family in Central Park is a children's illustrated book that takes place in a central park in a town in Guatemala. The story follows Izzabella, a young quetzal bird living inside the ceiba tree in the center of the park. She talks about different parts of her life, culture, and living in a diverse community with many other bird species. The story explores different and uncommon family dynamics through Izzabella, who was adopted by her Aunt Maria at a young age. Her experiences and fun stories normalize and support other children who don't have the typical two-parent families. This book provides something for all children. It creates a space for children to relate to Izzabella and her friends' families and feel seen, heard, and represented. For other children, it helps introduce and normalize things that appear different from their own lives. The book doesn't heavily focus on how these differences make Izzabella feel left out, but rather, we see how she lives her life just like any other kid through the acceptance and support of her community. Beyond the family dynamics, this book provides many opportunities for children to learn about Mexican and Guatemalan culture, which is heavily incorporated throughout the story. The pages provide an English and Spanish version of the text so that families learning Spanish together can practice with a fun and endearing story. From Maria and Rachel, enjoy!
