OverviewA study on music in Brazilian sound cinema in the 1930s, focusing on the use of modernist musical nationalism and popular music in soundtracks. Within the line of research 'Ethnography of musical practices, ' this dissertation used opinions of people of the time, in periodicals, as statements from 'informants.' This procedure was employed to understand nationalism and the impact of the arrival of sound cinema in the country, according to that society. It also analyses popular music in the media context of the early 20th century and in films. This work investigates the role of musical nationalism and popular music as elements that construct cultural identity.
