OverviewSeptember 1940: the height of the Blitz. When The Savoy advertises its very safe underground shelters, a crowd of people from Stepney in East London arrive at the hotel and demand entry. There they find a shelter worthy of The Savoy''s clientele: a dormitory with curtained and separate sleeping quarters for single men, single women and couples, with matching bedlinen; a curtained recess housing the sleeping Duke and Duchess of Kent; sandbags painted in the colours of the Union Jack; a dance floor and a well-stocked bar.
