This book achieves its goal of relating current trends in language education to the larger phenomenon of globalization. It excels at succinctly presenting the myriad manifestations of those trends around the globe and various related topics, all while maintaining one unifying narrative thread: language diversity is a resource to be valued rather than problematized. - Elizabeth Kissling, LINGUIST List (January, 2014). The nine compact chapters of this interesting book cover what by all measure is a complete survey course on bilingualism. The author takes up both sociolinguistic and psycholinguistic perspectives, both separately and in how these lenses need to be focused together on real world problems in language policy and language learning. Multilingual trends in a globalized world will be a useful handbook for both educators and policy makers. The key concept is the internationalization of language learning. Far from a narrow technical manual for learning an international language for instrumental purposes, the discussion problematizes the growing convergence on fewer and fewer global languages, offering a critical viewpoint. What will be the future of minority and indigenous languages in the globalized world? Central topics that receive serious attention include: diglossia, cross-language interaction, as in codeswitching and first language transfer, form and function in language teaching, and bilingualism in the family. Accessible to both final year undergraduate and graduate students, specialists in related fields will find it to be a handy reference volume. - Norbert Francis, Professor of Bilingual/Multicultural Education, Northern Arizona University
