Overview

Told in two perspectives, ""Mrs. D. and Me"" is a story about Sara, an Emergent Bilingual student who is nervous about starting a new school when she still finds speaking English challenging. It is also a story about Mrs. D., who is a multilingual Fourth Grade teacher that knows how to help students like Sara learn to find a new voice in English. Sara discovers it takes courage to speak in a new language and that she can be brave enough to overcome any obstacle. Mrs. D. discovers that gentle and consistent encouragement can help students reach their highest potential. Using some Spanish words, ""Mrs. D. and Me"" is a story that can be used to teach many different literary lessons. Point of view, perspective, story structure, character development, idiom, tone, mood, voice, symbolism, and audience, just to name a few. A caterpillar crawls through the pages of this story to remind students that change takes time and patience. If you are willing to put in the work, a wonderful new future can emerge.

Author Information

Erika De La Ossa was born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. She grew up in Southern California. Mrs. De La Ossa has been teaching Reading to elementary-aged students since 1997. ""Mrs. D. and Me"" is a story of herself as both a student and a teacher. Being one herself, Mrs. De La Ossa is a champion for Emergent Bilingual students. As an educator, leader, instructional coach, and mentor she strives to help students understand how important and valued they are. She lives with her husband, Fernando and two dogs, Remi and Zoey.
