Moving Mountains: Paying Attention to Weather and Climate

Overview

Environmental stewardship and wilderness protection are core values in outdoor programs and require a participant to tell why natural resources are important to them and to the future of our country. Today, environmental curriculum and nature-based lessons are taught in elementary and secondary schools. Beyond the intellectual learning in classrooms, experience in the wilderness and field research in nature is essential. The mountains particularly have much to teach us. Mountains are sacred places to people of all races, cultures, religions throughout the world. Mountains and glaciers are also a barometer of climate change and a bellwether of environmental trends. Mountains resemble leading indicators in the economic and political battle over climate change. Altering our destructive trajectory will be like moving mountains, and it will save them.

Reviews

""Tom Nisbett has had a lifelong love of the mountains, and his stories give the readers a firsthand look at the impact of climate change and energy policy on this planet. Tom shares some of his most memorable experiences which allow the reader to better grasp humanity's impact on Earth's most beautiful and remote places. Tom's stories should be a wakeup call for each of us, before it is too late to save the mountains."" --Bryan Day, executive director, Little Rock Port Authority ""In Moving Mountains, Tom issues a compelling plea for wise stewardship of wilderness spaces by cultivating a love for sights unseen via the sharing of his own experiences and issuing an invitation to link arms in this quest by taking the accessible first steps of repeated exposure and firsthand observation. From mamas hiking local trails with their children to mountaineers scaling peaks across the globe, this book is sure to inspire!"" -- Nikki Hudson, home educator and family adventure advocate ""Tom Nisbett, an experienced climber and explorer with an engaging, wise voice takes the reader on a series of treks to breathtaking destinations most of us will never visit, but, thanks to his words, the experiences come alive. His descriptions of exploring with others and learning together illustrate the spirit of humility and curiosity which mark each adventure."" --Kelly Bean, author of How To Be A Christian Without Going to Church: The Unofficial Guide To Alternative Forms of Christian Community ""Tom's travelogue of climbing adventures gives the reader an insider's view on what the mountains can tell us about climate change. Tom's call for protecting our wilderness as stewardship of our planet for future generations is compelling and is rooted in his personal climbing experience as much as it is in his educational and spiritual worldviews. --Matthew Cleveland, chief development officer, Arkansas Sheriffs' Youth Ranches ""Having known Tom for years while we were in Arkansas, I knew his heartbeat was to climb mountains. What I found in reading Moving Mountains was the pleasant surprise that the book's focus was on the effect of each mountain as it exposed the climate change that science keeps telling us is real. As an organic farmer, I see these effects daily and glad Tom and I are kindred spirits as stewards for the ones that come after us."" --Bruce Roberts, organic farmer, Harpeth Moon Farm
