OverviewBack in 1989, I had the privilege of being called to the mission field to work with Youth For Christ in Namibia, South West Africa. As I packed my bags to go, my father gave me wise words, Remember who you are and where you come from. Those words resonated with me over and over as I faced a world very different than the world I knew as a child. Those words grounded me and reminded me that no matter what I faced in the world, I had been equipped for the moments that I would face a world away from family and friends. This grounding enabled me to see family and friends in the wider circle of life as I remembered who I was, as a child of God and where I came from, as a participant in the long line of believers from all times and places. All along my journey, I was the recipient of gentle reminders of the love that had formed me, the community that had prepared me, and the grace that would sustain me for the calling to which disciples of Jesus Christ have been called. In my journey, I was reminded over and over again that no matter where we go, grace goes before us and God is ready to meet us no matter where we are. It is the gentle reminders of God's calling and grace that equip us for the journey we face, no matter where we are called. In our current time, it sometimes seems like we, as the Christian community, are living in a foreign land, and in fact, we are! Even in the mountains of North Carolina, where there is a church on every corner, the plethora of information in this internet age crowds our minds with competing voices which seem to pull us further away from the truth of who we are and where we come from. One of the tasks of the preacher in this confusing time is to bring us back to the center of God --- the grace we find in the gospel of Jesus Christ. In this collection of sermons, Ken Humphreys does just that. He reminds us that we are held by God, redeemed by Christ, claimed by love and have a home on Grace Street no matter where life may take us. This book contains gentle reminders of God's call upon our lives and equips us all --- whether raised in the church community or not --- to embrace our identity as children of God and inspires us to live into the calling to which we have been called. In its pages, you will find whispers of hope which inspires the church to seek new vistas, reminders of love in action which call us to participation in God's grand plan for our world, and the timeless truth of God's presence with us in our own communities challenging us to live vibrant lives of faith for our time.
