Motivational Interviewing for Hearing Care Providers

Overview

Individuals with hearing loss often spend several years struggling to hear before seeking a formal hearing assessment. Many further prolong their communication difficulties and challenges by postponing the adoption of hearing aids once prescribed. The World Health Organization asserts that ignoring prescribed treatments significantly contributes to poor health outcomes. Hearing care is no exception. Living with untreated hearing loss can adversely affect overall well-being. Traditional counselling, focused on patient education and advice giving, struggles to enhance compliance. Motivational Interviewing for Hearing Care Providers guides hearing care professionals in using motivational interviewing (MI) to help patients commit to treatment. This essential book presents positive MI treatment effects in various fields and advocates that hearing care needs similar improvements. The author breaks down MI into relevant components and skills and outlines optimal strategies. Theoretical concepts are paired with transcripts, exercises, and reflection prompts to help readers break free from detrimental communication patterns and transform their practice. Key Features Hearing care-specific dialogues and examples that enable the reader to envision the concepts being demonstrated in a way that mirrors their everyday practice Reflection questions and learning activities, specific to hearing care, at the end of every chapter Bolded key terms and glossary  Resources for educators and to facilitate implementing MI in the clinic  Opportunity to “Test Yourself” as well as “Next Steps” offering a variety of ways the reader can keep building their MI skills and learn more on the topic PluralPlus Online AncillariesQuizzes, Activities/Exercises, Case Studies, Links to Related Resources, Forms/Documents

Author Information

Bobbi-Jo Marlatt is a passionate Hearing Instrument Specialist who has worn hearing aids since childhood. After earning her BA in Psychology, she became an HIS and later pursued a Master of Applied Health Sciences and a Master of Education. Currently, she is completing her PhD at the University of Western Ontario, where she is researching motivational interviewing in hearing care. For over a decade, Bobbi-Jo has worked with Demant, supporting and training hearing care professionals across Canada. She was instrumental in designing the Hearing Instrument Specialist Program at Humber Polytechnic, where she also serves as a professor specializing in professional practice, ethics, and patient counseling. Her dedication to advancing hearing care extends to her role on the Board of Directors for AHIP in Ontario. She is also a member of the Canadian College of Health Leaders and holds the Canadian Health Executive (CHE) credential. Bobbi-Jo’s interest in motivational interviewing led to a collaboration with the Pacific Audiology Group, where she helped develop a six-part MI training program for hearing professionals, along with accompanying blogs, videos, and articles. Her work is driven by a passion to increase hearing aid adoption through enhanced patient-provider communication. When she’s not working, Bobbi-Jo enjoys gardening, being at her family cottage, having bonfires, cooking, running, and spending time with her family—and their beloved flock of birds—in the backyard.
