Mother Rasputin: The Serial Killer Nun

Overview

Mother Rasputin: The Serial Killer Nun In 1950, a routine FBI inquiry about a missing American girl led me to uncover one of Greece's most horrific criminal cases. Marina Soulakiotis, a 67-year-old Orthodox abbess known as ""Mother Rasputin,"" had systematically murdered at least 177 people while operating the Panagia Pefkovounogiatrissa Monastery as a sophisticated killing enterprise. Born into poverty in 1883, Marina transformed herself from a factory worker into a religious leader who exploited Greece's post-war vulnerabilities. Using promises of miraculous cures and spiritual salvation, she lured wealthy elderly women, tuberculosis patients, and desperate families to her remote monastery. There, she subjected victims to systematic torture disguised as religious discipline, forcing them to sign over their property before murdering them through starvation and abuse. Marina's crimes continued for over a decade, protected by religious authority, corrupted officials, and theological justifications that transformed obvious evil into claimed sanctity. Even after her conviction and death in prison in 1954, thousands of Orthodox believers worldwide continue to venerate her as a martyred saint. Her case revealed the terrifying capacity for religious symbols to be corrupted beyond recognition while maintaining their psychological power, proving that some forms of evil achieve immortality by successfully disguising themselves as virtue and exploiting humanity's deepest spiritual needs.
