Morocco: A Remembrance of Childhood, Colonialism and the Cold War

Overview

An award-winning, entertaining and often humorous memoir of a young boy coming of age in Morocco during the 1950's at the height of the cold war, while his military family becomes enmeshed in Morocco's troubled relationship with its French colonial overlords, it's fascinating Islamic history, and its egalitarian tribal culture. Much more than a memoir-an enlightening Morocco guidebook and a captivating book club pick. Imbued with a sense of warmth and authenticity, Morocco is an emotional and profoundly personal story that strikes the perfect balance between humor and nostalgia while engaging readers with sharp insights and vivid imagery of the times and places it covers. A poignant and evocative exploration of a unique childhood growing up between two worlds-one shaped by American military life, the other by the rich traditions of Morocco-the book successfully blends memories with the history of both countries, while bringing to life the beauty of Moroccan philosophies of family and community.

Author Information

James B. Farmer grew up as the son of a Navy pilot who moved his family around the U.S. and the world. After obtaining a BA from Cornell University, he spent three months traveling throughout Europe and then subsequently obtained an MCRP and LLB from The Ohio State University. During his legal career, his practice was focused on mergers and acquisitions. After almost forty years of drafting contracts designed to resolve other people's problems, he decided that the best kind of lawyer is a ""retired lawyer"" who now has the time to write the books he's always wanted to write. Morocco, his first published book, has received numerous awards from Literary Global (First Place in its Parenting & Family-Travel category, as well as honorable mention in six other non-fiction categories, including history, multicultural, relationships, religion and spirituality), Literary Titan (its Silver Book Award), American Writing Awards (Finalist in its Best New (Debut) Non-Fiction category), and the New York Book Festival (Honorable Mention in its Memoir category).
