OverviewShe married at seventeen. She raised nine children. And she held fast to faith through every challenge. More Martha Than Mary is a powerful, deeply human memoir honoring the unfinished story of Martha Brown-a woman who survived decades of psychological abuse, poverty, and relentless responsibility, yet built businesses, ran farms, managed rental properties, and raised a family that learned how to soar. Born one of thirteen children, Martha came of age in an era that offered women few choices and even fewer protections. Trapped in a controlling and psychologically abusive marriage, she endured conditions that would have crushed many. Yet through faith, grit, and an unshakable sense of humor, she created stability where there was none-and opportunity where it seemed impossible. This memoir began as Martha's own manuscript, left unfinished at her death. Her daughter, Patricia Brown Kummer, completes the story with honesty, compassion, and clear-eyed reflection. Together, mother and daughter weave a family saga that spans from World War I and the Great Depression into the twenty-first century-a story filled with sorrow, resilience, bizarre realities, and moments of unexpected laughter. At once heartbreaking and uplifting, More Martha Than Mary is a testament to the quiet strength of women who carry families, build livelihoods, and claim their freedom against all odds. It is a story of survival without bitterness, faith without naïveté, and joy that persists even after decades of adversity. This book will resonate with readers who are drawn to: - Memoirs of strong, resilient women - Stories of survival and recovery from emotional abuse - Mother-daughter legacy narratives - Family sagas grounded in history, faith, and grit - True stories that balance sorrow with humor and hope More Martha Than Mary is not just a memoir-it is a tribute to endurance, dignity, and the fierce love that shapes generations. Table of ContentsReviews""Determined to share her life's lessons, More Martha than Mary illustrates the arc of a woman's life through a memory box of stories. Dotted with historical sidelines, the author shares what life was like growing up in the early 20th century as a woman; becoming a child bride, raising a family, and surviving an abusive relationship in an era where women's roles were strongly defined and limited and where power resided with men. Through wit, charm, and honesty, the author generously shares timeless life wisdom. Her story reveals the years of verbal abuse, belittlement, and gaslighting by her husband, and yet through it all, regardless of him, she knew that she mattered. Her sense of self enabled her to believe in her own strength, take an incredible risk by leaving her husband, and create a new life-she is an inspiration."" -J Byrd, a 2025 Goodreads Choice Award winner and author of A Woman Remembers (everything) ""This beautiful tribute to the author's mother offers an intimate and moving look into a life lived with unwavering faith, indomitable determination, and an enduring legacy that extends far beyond the author's family.
