OverviewThe book brings together ten studies on some significant, if little-known, monuments of the Eastern Christian world in Anatolia and Transcaucasia. The author is a specialist in the art and archaeology of this area. With her husband, Jean-Michel Thierry, she has undertaken annual visits to the region for over forty years, and has published numerous papers on the monuments. Dr Thierry, chargee de conferences at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes, is particularly interested in the monumental painting and iconography of Cappadocia, Georgia and Armenia. These monuments are viewed as historical sources and witnesses to the complex civilization of the East Christian world of the early Middle Ages, which veered between provincialism and a persistence of Roman civilization.
