OverviewIn September 1943, with the German occupation and the advent of the Italian Social Republic, a hunt for Jewish people was unleashed, and the town of Montespertoli (Florence) rallied to protect the families most in danger. Among those who worked to help the wanted people, these pages recall the names of personalities such as the municipal secretary Tullio Sperduti, the Carabinieri marshal Carmelo Gorgone and the parish priest of San Michele a Castiglioni, Don Giulio Gradassi. Despite the rewards provided for the informers, none of the Jews present in the area was arrested or perished in the Shoah. Some of their descendants still reside in Montespertoli.
