He began his firefighting career in 1962 and came to the Monterey Fire Department in 1969. As the department's historian and creator of its restoration program, Ventimiglia has gathered historical information since 1969. He spent hundreds of hours obtaining photographs, collecting data, and listening to the stories of fellow firefighters like Capt. Harry Shaw, who was the first engineer in the department.
