Overview

In this eerie account of resilience, we follow a little boy who sneaks outside one evening to have a secret adventure all his own. He quickly discovers, however, that along with the beauty of the stars and the moon often come goofy, strange and even dangerous creatures of the night. Here, iconic characters of Halloween lore stand in as symbols of real adversity in real-life situations (monsters representing physical threats, witches creating intangible woes with their magic spells and ghosts personifying all of the regrets and apprehensions that keep us up at night). This cautionary tale utilizes a subdued color palette reminiscent of vintage scary movies and childhood Halloweens of days gone by. It challenges young readers with illustrations that vary between cute, unsettling and downright frightening.
